The paper means to be a first attempt to an explanation of the anomalies in coordination on the basis of syntactic evidence so as to rule out the possibility of playing down the great significance of the role of syntactic movement.The analysis carried out starts by postulating such an effective structure of coordination that the final order of the terms ‘out of place’ turns out to be justified in one and the same way without compelling the disposal of ‘exceptional’ data as bare stylistic choices, i.e. licenses that writers allow themselves when they decide not to obey syntactic rules.
